As early as in the beginning of the 19th century, Palanga was known in Europe as a sea resort. Besides summer holiday makers from various places of Poland, Russia and Lithuania, live artists, especially musicians, bands would come and make cultural time and entertainment of the resort more interesting and attractive.  Doctor J. Sventokhovskij in his article "Palanga a Place for Sea Bathing" published in a Poznan magazine "Medical News" ("Nowwiny Lekarskie") in 1901 provides some information about musical life of Palanga resort and bands performing here: "To make the stay of guests of Palanga more various, the Board of the resort signs annually the contract with a very good Kurland orchestra of dragoon regiment consisting of over thirty persons.   The orchestra performs twice a day in the park of the town and twice a week before lunch in the seacoast forest. In addition, the performances in summer are held here by another very attractive band which is taught to play very well, and in contrast to the first one, is marked by exceptional harmony of the instruments. The latter comes from Plunge and belongs to Mykolas Oginskis."

Since 1903 the performances of wind orchestras in summer time in Palanga resort have become traditional.

After the World War I, when the independence of Lithuania was restored, well known wind orchestras in Lithuania and outside it conducted by B. Jonusas and V. Visockis used to perform in Palanga every summer. The first burgomaster of Palanga doctor Jonas Sliupas every month paid the wind orchestras good money from the treasury of the resort, the musicians were provided with good conditions for work and leisure. The bands used to perform daily in the park of Count Tiszkiewicz, the repertoire included the most famous classical works and popular orchestra music.  The afternoon concerts of these wind orchestras would attract the holiday makers to the park where a rotunda for the orchestra performances was built in 1927. To listen to music in the park, to watch the sunset from the pier and to dance in "Jura" restaurant were unbreakable traditions of Palanga.
After the World War II for a few summers the wind orchestra from Vilnius Culture and Leisure Park, the conductor of which was great enthusiast of wind music V. Zilius, performed in Palanga. Juozas Domarkas, now the chief conductor of Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, played the clarinet in the orchestra and later on was its conductor.  This orchestra grew into the state wind orchestra "Trimitas". "Trimitas" and its conductor Romas Balciunas would also come to Palanga and contribute to its events and entertainment of its guests.
The wind orchestra of Klaipeda Culture and Leisure Park, conducted by Justinas Jonusas used to parade in town and play in the rotunda of Palanga Botanical gardens.

Palanga has its own wind orchestra since 1953. The pipers gathered into a band under the guidance of Augustas Juska. The first recognition came to the orchestra in 1955, and since 1960 Palanga wind orchestra participates every republican song festival and it wins prizes at the competitions there. Having only a few professionals in the band, the musicians played with great enthusiasm.

A professional wind orchestra belonging to Palanga Culture and Leisure Park was founded in 1961. In summer time it would perform in the rotunda of the Botanical gardens. In 1963 the orchestra was closed but the musicians did not leave their job: they played and organized concerts. After Agustas Juska left for Kretinga, the activity of the orchestra stopped. Seldom would the musicians gather into a group under the initiative of A. Klimovas.

A new stage in the life of Palanga wind orchestra is marked by the arrival of Romualdas Petraitis in 1978. The orchestra renewed its activity under his leadership. Traditional parades in the streets of Palanga and concerts in the rotunda of Botanical gardens have been started again. In 1979 a dance group was gathered and added to the orchestra. Palanga wind orchestra was the winner of the republican competitions of wind orchestras in 1980, 1983, 1985, 1987. In 1988 the wind orchestra participated in the competition of the wind orchestras of the former Soviet Union and was the winner.

In 1989 following the decision of the authorities of the resort, Palanga professional wind orchestra was founded. This orchestra performed in Russia, Armenia, Estonia and Germany. They made recordings in radio and TV. The orchestra has become an integral part of every festival. Such soloists and performers as Mindaugas Gilys, Asta Krisciunaite, Edmundas Kucinskas, Vytautas Tetenskas, Pranas Narusis, Antanas Smolskus played and sang with Palanga wind orchestra.  In 1992, the hard economical situation resulted in the decision of the Palanga town Council to close activity of the orchestra. The last performance of it took place in the first commemoration of the 13th of January in 1992.
The concerts were prepared and conducted by Romas Balciunas, Pranas Narusis, Algis Lukosevicius, Tauras Adomavicius.

In spite of dispersing of the musicians to various works, they gathered on May 8, 1993 for the concert dedicated to the 40th anniversary of Palanga wind orchestra. The name of Palanga wind orchestra was advertised once again. It was faithfulness to the profession, to the tradition of playing wind instruments, eagerness to play.

The former musicians of the wind orchestra were invited by Vygantas Rekasius to the first rehearsal of the renewed orchestra on April 1, 2000 (and this was no joke for April 1). In the summer of the same year Palanga wind orchestra could be seen marching along the streets and heard playing during the Summer festival, in the rotunda of Palanga Botanical gardens.  Renewed and young orchestra, its musicians and the conductor Vygantas Rekasius have established themselves in the variety of cultural events of Palanga resort. As the old park of Tiszkiewicz, the roar of the Baltic Sea, its golden beaches, romantic pier and nature of the sea coast are alive so is the tradition of the wind orchestra. lasting for over 100 years.

Palanga wind orchestra and its musicians firmly believe that love for music and beauty expressed by the sounds of wind instruments embellish and enhance the modern resort of Palanga.
